Monitoring an anaesthetic can be a very stressful task that carries a big responsibility. In human medicine there are Anaesthetists specifically responsible for this, but in Small Animal Veterinary medicine it is often the role of the Veterinary Nurse.
Learning about all the different drugs & how they work in the body, as well as how to keep an animal under anaesthetic safely, is an important part of Nurse training. It is the Nurses job as an Anaesthetist to ensure the animal is asleep enough & unaware of what is going on, to allow the procedure to be performed; but at the same time, ensuring the animal is OK under the anaesthetic & that it recovers smoothly. Here is one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses Kay, monitoring the anaesthetic of a dog having a dental procedure".
