SUMMER WATER WARNING

Posted: 11th August 2018

How can blue-green algae affect animals? Bloom & scum forming blue-green algae can produce toxins. Toxin producing blooms are called Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). These toxins can kill wild animals, farm livestock & domestic pets. Farmers & pet owners should keep their animals away from affected waters.

Not all blue-green algae blooms & scums are toxic, but you can’t tell just by looking at them, so it’s best to assume they are. Although algal scum isn’t always harmful, avoid contact with it & the water close to it.

  • Blue-green algae can be toxic to dogs. Please call Vale Vets immediately if you suspect poisoning.
  • Do NOT let your dog drink from or swim in water containing blue-green algae
  • Blue-green algae is most common during hotter, drier months when there is less rain

Please call Us t: 01275 847 400 if you are concerned.
